Jak Locke Jak Locke Goes Too Far released 2012 December 18 Vaudevillian / Blues / Comedy
Songs that have gotten me thrown out of various places across the country, sometimes because they misinterpreted the joke, sometimes because I really did ask for it
LINER NOTES
Some of these songs have gotten me thrown out of some of the finest in uptight establishments! Sometimes because they misinterpreted the joke, sometimes because I really did ask for it.
Whether they're lampooning various eras of male chauvinism or being honest about Mardi Gras and hurricanes, most of these songs at one time or another ended up offending somebody enough to get me removed from the stage, from Tulsa, OK's overpriced restaurant scene to Covington, LA's famed White Flight Avenue, to even Mobile, AL's dumpy dives.

IT'S WHEN YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF FIRSTS, I THINK
AND PEOPLE HATE YOU
BECAUSE YOU DON'T GET THE MAGAZINES THEY GET
AND YOU HATE PEOPLE
BECAUSE THEY DON'T GET THE MAGAZINES YOU GET
"I GOTTA FIND A PLACE I CAN CRAWL UP FROM
OR A REALITY SOMEONE CAN BE ASHAMED OF
I'M ONLY NAUSEOUS WHEN I'M ALIVE, ANYWAY"
TECHNOLOGY KILLED THE EXISTENTIAL CRISIS
WHEN YOU CAN TURN ON YOUR OWN SPOTLIGHT,
EVERYONE CAN
AND THE ROOM GETS SO DAMN BRIGHT
YOU START FIENDING FOR THE DARK
"THERE'S THRILL IN WATCHING IT DECAY
AND I BET I'LL REGRET IT ONE DAY
BUT NOT TODAY, AND MAYBE I CAN DIE
BEFORE IT GETS HERE"
YOU HAD BETTER HOPE SO.

When joke projects accidentally get some attention
LINER NOTES
Charlie Brown Gone Mad was started in 2003 as a joke with the original intention of lampooning bad emo and punk bands and awful recording decisions. I put up a terrible website on Geocities and every few months I'd record and release songs with cringy lyrics, unsteady vocals and horrible production value.
As time went on, it became a more proper fake band. In no way is that sentence supposed to make any sense. Around 2006, thanks to Myspace, the band actually got a tiny but enthusiastic fanbase in Arizona of all places and I decided to put a little more effort into the songs, enough that some that started off as CBGM songs ended up being integrated into my main act (Clock, Hannah, Don't Stay, the chorus of Breakpoint, others I can't remember right now.) Here is the album that resulted from it.
Luke Locke: Guitar and Vox!
Mike Mears: Guitar and Vox!

REISSUE NOTES
This was a quick 17 minute demo of 6 alt rock antifolk tracks. The most interesting song to me is "Dive Bar" which is a funkier cut of "Canto XXVIII" with a different bridge and lyrics. I'd release "Canto" six months later on Battery Acid as a much more metal song, though it's surprising how little was changed between the two versions. Play Anyway had a planned short run and if you were hanging around the Neutral Ground Coffeehouse around that time, I probably gave you one of these back then.

From the summer of 2004 comes the rock and smoky blues collection Shut Off. This was actually an amalgamation of three different demos I had been working on at the time, all not-so-coincidentally themed around secluding and walling off. Not the best time to live through but there's some good songs and seeds of future songs that came out of this one that I'd forgotten about. It had a production run of a few months until I shifted all the focus on Brother Sisyphus when it came out.

Loud! Angry! Only ever heard by a few dozen people! It's the demo from the third and final incarnation of The Dead Outlaws at the end of 2003, a death metal band that we just couldn't get off the ground no matter who was in it. I cleaned some mud off the mix and now it's back for listening.

I originally intended this album to be nothing more than a demo CD, only releasing it after people kept asking when we were going to record the songs we were playing at the time. I discontinued it in 2006, and now, four years later, you can hear the whole thing from this site.

reissued 2019 December 03
REISSUE NOTES
This short run cassette release from 2003 was a sort of catch basin for the various projects I was developing at the time so it spans a lot of different styles, even for me. A lot of songs that evolved and ended up on later releases started out here so mmm, raw dough. When I finished recording the songs I wanted on it there was room for one more song so I brought the master tape and a tape recorder to my crappy job at the time while I was washing dishes and made up a stupid lounge song about washing dishes until my manager came in. Since he ended up on the album, offering a percentage is only fair so David, if you're reading this hit me up, I got probably at least thirty cents for you from back sales plus inflation.

Jak Locke Already Fading On Some Horizon released 2003 February 05 Blues Rock / Folk Rock / Folk
reissued 2019 December 18
REISSUE NOTES
This was a companion / sequel to December 2002's "All Our Sunlight Scattered" which had only just been released two months prior at the time, and "Brokedowntown" came the very next month. Remastering this generally stern and sober collection about losing and leaving right after remastering the more raucous, lo-fi, and often silly "Brokedowntown" has been an interesting contrast for me to revisit and made me remember a lot of things I'd forgotten about a very transitional point in my life. Going into more depth there would probably be completely self-involved, says the guy who made an entire site about his projects. Anyway, it's got some good songs on it and you should check it out if you missed it the first time in 2003 (you did).

REISSUE NOTES
Each reissue so far was something I had deliberately discontinued at some point -- this one's unique because I apparently just plain forgot about it. While rounding up ancient files for the site overhaul I ran across a collection of live recordings I'd released as an album at the end of 2002 that fell between the cracks some 15 or so versions of the site ago.
The One-Eyed Jacks was my group from January through December 2002 that performed mostly in New Orleans and Metairie with a couple of jaunts to Thibodaux and Lafayette here and there. We never recorded a demo or studio album but tape-recorded almost every show, so after the last performance I had put together the best recordings of the set's songs and released it on MP3.com. As you may have noticed, MP3.com hasn't been a thing for a very long time, as in people have been born and graduated high school in the time since MP3.com was a place for bands to put their MP3s.
Of note in the band was Shane Michaels on bass who played on a ton of my early albums and who I did a club residency with for a few months just recently-ish in 2019. Now the live collection's back up on Bandcamp and you can hear what we were up to, good lord, 20 years ago.

REISSUE NOTES
Strange Apartments hails from late 2002 when I was spending time between Marrero and Thibodaux as a transient picking up odd jobs and bouncing around different apartments. The recording quality varies widely as a result of recording in very different locations from song to song but the sound concept is pretty consistent throughout, a mix of melancholy and trippy folk and alt rock.

REISSUE NOTES
Here is the very odd Laced, brought to you from a very hazy period in October 2002. While I was going through the master sourcing I had to admit that I frankly don't remember recording half of these songs, but it does sound like I had a great time doing it. As was typical for me for this era, the original release enjoyed about two weeks or so of distribution before the tapes or discs ran out and I had moved on to something else. Loud antifolk and bizarre cassette-speed experimentation await!

reissued 2021 November 03
REISSUE NOTES
This reissue comes from July 2002, a rather jarringly disparate collection of punk and folk rock songs I recorded at Shane Padilla's studio DWS over that year's spring and summer when I'd come visit him. As a result he features heavily on the album, mostly on drums. The Renovated Enervated had a short run of about a month before I got distracted with focusing more heavily on The One-Eyed Jacks and relocating.

REISSUE NOTES
"Bloom" was a bizarre half hour of depitched antifolk and primal blues available for about three weeks on cassette and CD in June 2002, and intended as a spiritual sequel to November 2001's only slightly less odd "Seed". I left most of the copies of it around Danneel Street, Esplanade Avenue and the Westbank in random places for people to find, though a few did end up getting sold at shows to generous listeners. Once they ran out I never bothered making more and eventually forgot all about it while I focused on the next album "All Our Sunlight Scattered". This was an antifolk album released at the end of April 2002. In October 2001, I was asked to compose and record an original score in a month for The Nicholls Players' production of the 1945 play "Dark of the Moon" -- incidental background music, intermission and inter-scene transitions. "Datura Holiday" came out as a very limited release on cassette in September 2001, a week before "Dusk Segment". With the source tracks recorded with friends in the room and definitely under influences over the course of a few days, it tends to be a more grinding listen than usual even for the earlier experimental material thanks to its aggressively murky recording experiments and more than a few opaque inside jokes. All the same, it's a part of the full discography and now it's back for anyone who's ready to get really weird in the deep cuts.

reissued 2019 November 07
REISSUE NOTES
"Wasn't 200 Proof your band in 1998?" you ask, showing a frankly terrifying detailed knowledge about my past. "Why's there this 200 Proof album from 2001?"
In April 2001 about two years into my band Paradox Prophecy's existence, we got bored with the duo thing and completely changed our sound and setlist to funky bluesy rock. The bassist and guitarist we added had been in 200 Proof and we all liked the name so we just went with that since it fit the new style way better than the name Paradox Prophecy would have.
We recorded a six track demo and spread it around for a minute and then some people got too busy and some ended up in jail or something and so that band never happened, though a year later a lot of the songs we had worked on would end up in my next band The One Eyed Jacks' set.
Chances are very very good that you were not one of the people this demo made it to back then so heeere ya go, fresh mix included at no extra charge.

This is a quick and dirty funk rock EP from early 2001. I can't remember if anyone else played on it or if I did everything on it anymore since that was like 28 chapters ago. Four out of the five songs end up redone on later recordings but here's where they started, all themed around a nightclub sleazebag, though oddly Nightclub Sleazebag isn't one of the songs on here, go figure.
BUY / LISTEN:
Paradox Prophecy Dilate released 2000 November 19 Folk Rock / Rock
LINER NOTES
When we started this band we wanted to do rock but were too impatient to find other people to play bass and all so the stripped down style we've been doing the past year sort of dictated itself.
We didn't mind and it was fun.
But when we recorded what would become the roots of these songs in one of our cousin's backyard on a stripped down kit and a failing Vox amp and listened back to them we finally realized on almost every song we were saying "boy wouldn't this sound better if it had a bass line here or a harmony here or a lead here or a or a or a or a"
And so thanks to some DIY overdubs we're doing what we originally wanted to do when we started this band, at least for this album. Maybe this is how we'll do it from now on, maybe just this one time, either way this is how they go for now.

REISSUE NOTES
Back in August I started remastering "The Gone", an album/demo I made in 2000 of acoustic rock, folk and some trippy stuff. I say "started", because putting together The Monochromes ate up most of my spare time for the following three months but now I've gotten it and myself in effect and finished cleaning this relic up. It's still pretty hissy and distorted and bloomy thanks to the source tracks coming from old cassette tapes, but it's waaay better than it was when it was around the first time.

I started a band in 1999 with Rob Harrison which was supposed to eventually be punk and trippy rock but we ended up doing folk and antifolk because finding other band members and buying a better amp and drum kit was for people with money or time or some excuse that we thought sounded justified at the time I'm sure. Anyway this was our first demo we dashed off when we thought we were doing acoustic music "just for now", and now it's rereleased in all its one-mic-one-take hissy cassette glory.

REISSUE NOTES
This is a ten-year remastered rerelease.
The audio quality is severely compromised on the majority of these songs, as all surviving master tracks were on copies of copies on cassette (and cheap cassette, at that). "Surviving", because many of the individual instrument tracks are lost forcing the use of the final mixdown in the remastering. Some use old keyboard drums and some have real drums. This collection is kind of like a sonic quilt. But here it exists once again for listening, against all odds!

Everything by Jak Locke
reissued 2022 February 16
Frequent flyers on this site know that I like to reissue the missing pieces from the catalog as I come across them, and that for many of them I'm able to find at least some isolated elements like drum parts or vocals that I can polish the EQ on and mix down into cleaner sounding tracks. Today's reissue, "Passive Blue" from April 1999, didn't allow that.
I've had my only chewed-up cassette copy of it digitized for years in all its furry, buzzy, barely audible and un-reissueable glory. It's been a particularly maddening project because I haven't run across any of the raw takes and I *know* there were at least two tapes I used to record some of the songs pingpong style, and another tape I recorded some of the songs on a cheap 4 track, because it was the first time I'd used a 4 track. I keep everything and definitely wouldn't have recorded over source tracks, so it's weird to not have found a trace of this one's takes (or the master for that matter) when there's other reissues I found fully preserved raw tracks for that I barely remember even making.
So instead of just sitting on the reissue until the heat death of the universe, I've done what I can to EQ the ragged dub I have to a better sonic standard. A lot of the lyrics capture what I remember of that time very well: joyfully killing time hanging out with friends when not lamenting being in a terrible job and relationship I was too inert to get out of (her and I still had five months to go at that point before it mercifully ended, good lord). Give it a listen.

LINER NOTES
Jak Locke: guitar, vocals, bass, drums
Wess Walker: lead guitar on tracks 1,2,4,5,7,8,10,12
reissued 2022 April 27
REISSUE NOTES
Today's release "Empty Rooms" was a fun delve for me because it has my very first recorded attempts at playing my own straight-up folk music, the understandably somewhat shaky "Don't You Ever Learn" and "Fork In The Road" from June 1998. At the time I was digging deep into Bob Dylan's pre-Street-Legal discography and had just had my latest band fall apart (again), so I was keen to try writing something that wouldn't necessarily be reliant on others to perform live for a change.
The rest of the album hails from a few months later in October, largely comprised of songs from a couple impromptu jams in Thibodaux with me on vocals / rhythm guitar and Wess Walker on lead guitar that I layered bass, drums and harmony vocals over afterward. Fortunately I was able to find the source cassettes from those sessions because the only release copy of it I could find in my collection had degraded to a warbly gargling mess.
Up to that point I'd occasionally dipped here and there into acoustic guitar songwriting styles, but always with more of an alt rock bent and definitely never as genre-strict as I had on most of this demo. Even with keeping so tight and formal to the genres here, it was ironically freeing and thrilling to find myself able to write songs in styles that, until then, I had never considered I'd be capable of attempting. "Oh man, I couldn't do that, I only know how to write punk and alt" suddenly wasn't accurate for my guitar songs anymore, and what an exciting realization that was to have and cultivate. Within less than a year I'd discover antifolk and really start going down rabbit holes.
